Young Authors

Lauren won second place in Young Author's at school her 2nd grade year.  She wrote a story called "The three little icicles and the big bad polar bear".  It was about 3 icicles trying to outsmart a polar bear but the icicles end up melting or getting eaten.  Because she won we got invited to a writing workshop.  Her book was on display in the library.  She was very excited to be an author and I was a proud mama!

Here's her story:

Once upon a time there lived three little Icicles and a Big Bad
Polar Bear.  The Big Bad Polar bear lived in a big, dark cave.  The Three
Little Icicles hung by the big, dark cave.  They loved to play hide and
seek with the Polar Bear.  That was their favorite game.
“Come back here you slippery, sneaky, little icicles,” he would yell.
They always got away because they were so fast.
One day the Big Bad Polar Bear woke up and was very hungry.  He
set up a trap to catch the icicles.  He got a rope and made it into a
great, big net.  He hung, it up high, but the Icicles were too smart.  They
saw the trap and didn’t go in it.
Instead, the Polar Bear got stuck in his own trap and the Icicles
put rocks all around the net with the Polar Bear underneath.  The Icicles
were pleased with themselves so they went home and had ice cold
chocolate milk.
The next day the sun was very, very hot.  The first little Icicle
melted because she was little and the sun was so hot. The Polar Bear
laughed and said, “Your sister melted!  Ha ha, your sister melted!!”
The second little Icicle got so mad that her face turned fiery, hot
and red and that was the end of the second Icicle.
The Polar Bear looked sad.  He turned to the third little Icicle and
said, “Meet me at the apple tree at 3:00.  I have a special present for
you”
The third little Icicle tried to outsmart the Polar Bear, so she went
to the apple tree at 2:00 instead.  She left him a little present.  The
Polar Bear opened it.  It was a bomb that blew up and turned him pink.
The next day the Polar Bear said to the third Icicle, “Meet me at
the Gingerbread House at 1:00 so I can congratulate you on
outsmarting me.”
The icicle got there two hours early to try to outsmart him again,
but the Polar Bear was already there.  The icicle tried to run but the
Polar Bear grabbed her and ate her.
The three little Icicles learned three valuable lessons:  The
sun is hot, it’s never good to be angry, and you can’t always
outsmart a Polar Bear.
